Pilot project of ammonia based desulfurization and decarbonization successfully started its operation

On April 22, good news came from the site of Ningbo Jiufeng Thermal Power Co., Ltd. that the upgraded and integrated ammonia based desulfurization and decarbonization pilot project which was independently developed by Jiangnan Environmental Protection Co., Ltd. and with independent intellectual property rights successfully started its operation. In addition to desulfurization and decarburization, the technology converts waste sulfur and carbon resources into ammonium sulfate and ammonia bicarbonate fertilizers with high added value. All operating indicators of the unit are better than the design value, and the decarburization efficiency is more than 60%; Ammonia slip is less than 8mg/Nm3; The by-product ammonium bicarbonate meets the requirements of the national agricultural ammonium bicarbonate fertilizer GB 3559-2001 standard; The decarburization capacity exceeds 120% of the design value. This historic breakthrough marks that the integrated ammonia based desulfurization and decarbonization technology by Jiangnan Environmental Protection Company has become mature and has the conditions for comprehensive industrial promotion and application, which also marks that the ammonia based desulfurization and decarbonization technology of Jiangnan Environmental Protection Company has taken the lead in the world.

Jiangnan Environmental Protection is a leading ammonia based desulfurization enterprise in the world. In 1998, JNG established its Environmental Protection Research Institute. Adhering to the concept of green development, it has broken through the major technical problems of ammonia based desulfurization that have not been solved by world-class companies and successfully solved the problems of ammonia slip and aerosol. JNG has mastered the core technology of ammonia slip control, the projects in operation has ammonia slip of less ¡Ü 3mg/Nm3. The company has built more than 500 sets of desulfurization units, accounting for more than 80% of the national ammonia desulfurization market, with large scale projects accounting for 90%. It is a leading enterprise in ammonia based desulfurization both in China and abroad.

Adhering to the concept of green cycle, high efficiency and low carbon development, JNG is committed to developing the integrated technology of ammonia based desulfurization and decarbonization, applying the core technology of ammonia slip control of ammonia based desulfurization to ammonia based decarbonization, successfully solved the major technical problem of ammonia slip in the process of ammonia based decarbonization, and successfully developed the integrated ammonia based desulfurization and decarbonization.

At present, JNG has 119 domestic patents, including 57 invention patents and 62 utility models; JNG also holds 11 families of international patents of 159 patents in total, all of which are invention patents and covers more than 20 countries and regions in the world; JNG also has 2 software copyrights and has obtained the certification of national and provincial intellectual property implementation system, forming a complete intellectual property system with ammonia based desulfurization and decarbonization technology as the core.

The large amount of greenhouse gas CO2 emissions has caused global warming. This is a major survival problem that human are facing in the twenty-first century. As early as the 1980s, western developed countries proposed CO2 emission reduction, but they have been suffering from the lack of cost-effective decarbonization technology thus the progress is relatively slow.

Compared with traditional organic amine based decarburization technology, ammonia based decarburization technology has the advantages of low investment and operation cost, but major technical problems such as ammonia escape cannot be solved. As early as 2007, world famous companies, such as Alstom, started the research of ammonia based decarburization, but they have not been able to completely solve the technical problem of ammonia slip and failed to promote its application. The integrated ammonia based desulfurization and decarbonization technology developed by JNG not only successfully solved the major technical problem of ammonia slip, but also converted the waste carbon resources into ammonium bicarbonate fertilizer, avoiding the high-energy CO2 regeneration process, significantly reducing the investment and operating costs, and the decarbonization cost is about 50% of that of the organic amine based method. At the same time, it also solves the technical and cost problems of carbon sequestration.

With ammonia desulfurization and decarbonization as the core technology, the company innovatively develops the green fertilizer industry chain: it proposes to use solar energy, wind energy and other clean energy to electrolyze water to produce hydrogen. Hydrogen and nitrogen in the air will be used to synthesize "green ammonia", replacing the traditional method of using coal to produce "ash ammonia"; "Green ammonia" is used for desulfurization and decarburization, and produces low nitrogen and low-cost ammonium sulfate and ammonium bicarbonate fertilizer, realizing a new production mode of non carbonization in China's nitrogen fertilizer industry! Thus, 110 million tons of CO2 emission can be reduced annually.

Using low nitrogen fertilizer ammonium sulfate and ammonium bicarbonate recovered from ammonia desulfurization and decarbonization to replace high nitrogen urea can fundamentally solve the problem of low nitrogen utilization rate and large nitrogen loss (annual loss exceeds 10 million tons/year) caused by excessive use of high nitrogen urea in China; The nitrogen loss also caused serious secondary pollution of water and atmosphere. After the use of low nitrogen and low-cost desulfurization and decarbonization fertilizers, about 100 billion yuan of fertilizer costs can be saved every year, significantly reducing farmers' burden, mobilizing farmers' enthusiasm for grain production, and ensuring food security in China.

The successful development of integrated ammonia based desulfurization and decarbonization technology has provided strong technical support for China's carbon peaking and carbon neutralization goals and made outstanding contributions to improving the human living environment, benefited the society, and also brought the company a trillion level market space.
